Traditional CCTV records footage to a recorder on site. Cloud CCTV sends some or all footage, or the management of the system, to a remote service accessed over the internet. For many organisations this changes how CCTV is used day to day, but it is not automatically the right choice for every site.
What "cloud CCTV" can mean
The term covers several approaches:
- Fully cloud-recorded systems, where cameras send footage directly to a remote service;
- Hybrid systems, where footage is recorded locally and selected clips or lower-resolution streams are stored remotely;
- Cloud-managed systems, where recording stays on site but configuration, health monitoring and user access are handled through an online platform.
Understanding which model is being proposed is the first step in comparing options.
Potential benefits
- Remote access from authorised devices without complex network configuration;
- Central management of users, permissions and settings across many sites;
- Health monitoring, with alerts when cameras go offline or storage has issues;
- Resilience, because footage stored off site is not lost if a recorder is stolen or damaged;
- Easier updates, as software can be maintained centrally.
Practical considerations
Bandwidth
Sending video over the internet uses bandwidth. A site with many high-resolution cameras may need a suitable connection, or a hybrid approach that keeps full-quality footage locally. A survey should consider the existing network and any other services that depend on it.
Cyber security
Any connected system needs to be configured securely: strong authentication, controlled user access, up-to-date firmware and sensible network separation. Ask how data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and how access is logged.
Data protection
Using a cloud service does not remove your responsibilities as the organisation operating the cameras. The Information Commissioner's Office guidance covers matters such as retention, security, sharing footage and the relationship with service providers who process data on your behalf. Check where data is stored and what contractual terms apply.
Ongoing costs
Cloud services are often charged by subscription. It is worth comparing the total cost over the expected life of the system, including storage, licences and support, against an on-site alternative.
Is it right for you?
Cloud or hybrid CCTV tends to suit organisations with several sites, limited on-site IT support or a need for remote oversight. Single sites with modest needs and limited bandwidth may be well served by a conventional recorder with secure remote viewing. Often the most sensible answer is a mix, chosen camera by camera.
Questions to ask a provider
When comparing proposals, it helps to ask the same questions of each provider: where footage is stored, how long it is kept, who can access it, how access is logged, what happens if the internet connection fails, and how you can export footage if you change supplier. Clear answers make it easier to compare like with like and to document your decisions.
